about

This is the first of two volumes of Keith Moliné's late 80s music, recorded when he was a student at Sheffield University towards the end of the city's "People's Republic Of South Yorkshire" heyday. Radical politics informed a lot of his academic and creative work at the time, though thankfully he never managed to write words for the musical pieces presented here. Rather the dense, blasted textures of the music reflect the bracing sense of old values and assumptions being obliterated in the white heat of revolutionary theory. They were different times.

Moliné wanted to make music that sounded more like it had proceeded from an organic process of group interaction than the hermetic electronic experiments of his "Hampshire" music (available on this site.) He was also interested in the architectural quality of some of the guitar music that was being made at the time (such as various groups on 4AD's roster.) Unfortunately, he never managed to hook up with anyone who shared his musical interests. Nor did he own any instruments.

What he did have was a Casio SK-1 sampler, which he used to sample favourite textures and atmospheres from his record collection rather than as a tool of quotation or a means of aping musical instruments. These textural samples were then worked up into the compositions presented here. Other equipment used included a Boss DSD-2 Delay/Sampling Pedal, a bass, and a Fostex 4-track cassette machine. (A borrowed guitar also makes an appearance.)

As with the other releases in the Restored And Recovered series, Moliné has applied the exciting techniques of today to the process of restoring and enhancing the original material, which existed in a grisly state on failing decades-old cassette tapes.
